ARCHIVED - Spanish embassy workers in UK warn that strike may affect visa applications
Workers at the Spanish Embassy in Berlin have joined their UK colleagues in protesting wage freezes
The employees of the Spanish Foreign Affairs Office in the United Kingdom have been protesting for a week now over work conditions after not having their salaries raised in the last 13 years, with some of them now finding they are paid less than minimum wage.
The three Spanish consulates in the UK – in London, Manchester and Edinburgh – as well as the Embassy in London, are currently operating on a “reduced staff basis”, which they have warned may mean that “British citizens might be affected when applying for a visa to travel to Spain”.
Currently, a visa is required to enter Spain for any citizen of a country not in the European Union – which since Brexit includes the UK, of course – who wishes to stay on Spanish territory for more than 90 days in a 180-day period.

As part of their strike action, the Embassy and consulate staff have staged a protest in Manchester today, Monday March 21, that started in front of the Consulate General of Spain and marched towards St. Peter’s Square, where many protests in the city start and finish.
Now, the Spanish Embassy in Berlin, Germany has also joined the indefinite strike action, as the staff there are also affected by the loss of purchasing power after the 13-year wage freeze. German citizens do not need a visa to enter Spain, but the strike is likely to cause other issues there.
