ARCHIVED - Spanish ex-king plans a lunch date with King Charles III in London
The disgraced former monarch of Spain looks set to travel to the UK in mid-April
Speculation and doubt seem to follow Juan Carlos I, former king of Spain, everywhere he goes and his leisure plans for April are no exception. Sources close to the ex-monarch, who abdicated the throne in 2014, claim that he will attend a private lunch with King Charles III in London next week before returning to Spain to take part in a regatta.
The current plans will see the Emeritus King arriving in Sanxenxo in the town of Pontevedra for its annual sailing regatta on April 22 and 23 but first, he will make a quick pit-stop in London to dine with King Charles before his coronation on May 6. This will be the first time the royal cousins have met since Juan Carlos attended the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II last September.
The former king will only spend a few days in Spain before jetting back to Abu Dhabi on April 24, where he has lived in exile since August 2020.
Juan Carlos, now 85, is still a keen sailor and it’s understood that his own ship, rather ironically named ‘the Rascal,’ will compete in the Spanish Cup regatta this month. He had intended to return to Sanxenxo for another sailing competition in the third week of May, but has been advised against it by officials in Madrid since it’s too close to the municipal and regional elections.
In all likelihood, Juan Carlos will be invited to the coronation in London next month, where he would be reunited with his son, King Felipe, but the palace hasn’t yet said if he’ll attend.
Failing this, the Emeritus King has himself confirmed that he will return to the UK at the end of August to participate in the 6m class World Championship regatta.
