ARCHIVED - Spanish expert predicts heatwaves of up to 50 degrees
Temperature rise of 2ºC in Spain “almost guaranteed” by 2040
Spain has just experienced the earliest June heatwave in 40 years so it’s no secret that the country is heating up, but now experts are warning that if something drastic isn’t done, temperatures could increase by as much as 6ºC by 2040, plunging the country into scalding heatwaves where the mercury reaches a blistering 50ºC.
According to Jorge Tamayo of the Valencia branch of Aemet, regardless of what is done from now on to mitigate climate change, a lot of the damage has already been done.
“Whatever we do, now we are going to suffer 20 more years of high temperatures because we are living from what we emitted before, he said, stressing that global warming “is not something that is going to happen, it is something that is already happening.”
The effects on the environment are easy to spot: average temperatures in Spain are climbing, we are experiencing more intense rainfall each year and tropical nights where the thermometers top 20ºC have gone from an occasional occurrence to practically lasting all summer long.
The temperature of the sea has also increased.
The problem isn’t confined to Spain either, according to the expert, and in the coming years globally, the planet will warm up, creating more frequent and intense storms.
“The heatwaves are going to be much more intense and possibly we will start talking about heatwaves of temperatures of 50ºC,” he predicted.
To mitigate the situation to some degree, Mr Tamayo insists that Spain needs “political, economic and technological” interventions: applying measures and protocols proposed by scientists against climate change, adhering to the Paris Agreement and lowering greenhouse gases drastically.
