ARCHIVED - Spanish government delays implementing dual carriageway tolls
Spain will focus on the economic recovery of the transport sector before launching new toll roads
The government in Spain has ruled out opening a debate with the transport sector on implementing a toll payment system on the country’s dual carriageways for the time being, preferring to focus on the economic recovery of this industry and others which have been hardest hit by the pandemic.
Additional tolls have been one of the issues raised by transport companies when they have threatened strike action, and the Ministry of Transport has committed to including them in the plan to develop the payment system when the time is right.
“In this environment and context, we must attend to the economic situation and the most affected sectors, transport being one of them. We will propose it at the most propitious moment and always with consensus, but now the bases are not given to facilitate that context, so in the short term we will hardly be able to contemplate it,” the minister said this week.
However, the measure will have to be put on the table at some point, since it forms part of the Sustainable Mobility Law agreed with Europe, with the ultimate goal of maintaining the road network in optimal condition and contributing to the decarbonisation of the economy.
