ARCHIVED - Spring forward, fall back: remember to change the clocks this weekend
Daylight Saving Time 2023 comes into effect in Spain on Sunday March 26
Now that spring is officially here, summer time is also set to begin with the first change in the clocks this year. This is great news for those who enjoy being outdoors, as the evenings will be longer and the temperatures are beginning to heat up.
Although it’s called ‘summer time’, the clocks are actually changed to their new schedule in March so that workers can take advantage of more hours of natural daylight.
The bad news? We’ll lose an hour in bed since Daylight Saving Time follows the old adage: spring forward, fall back.
So, do the clocks go backwards or forwards this weekend?
This year, the time change from winter hours to summer will take place on March 26 or more precisely, in the early hours leading from Saturday 25 into Sunday March 26. Those living in mainland Spain will have to move the clocks forward at 2am to 3am, so the day will actually last just 23 hours instead of 24.
Daylight savings kicks in an hour early in the case of the Canary Islands, at 1am.
This means that in March 2023, the clocks will ‘spring forward’, whereas they’ll ‘fall back’ in autumn.
The objective of the two time changes that occur each year is to adjust the working day with the daily daylight hours to save energy. The next time we’ll have to put the clocks back an hour will be the last Sunday of October.
Daylight Savings has been a hot topic of debate for years, not only in Spain but in the rest of Europe as well, with many people feeling it’s more hassle than it’s worth. However, for this year at least, we’ll just have to suffer through the change with a little less sleep.
