ARCHIVED - Start of autumn in Spain at 9.21pm: Fall equinox on September 22
Today Wednesday September 22 is the autumn equinox and marks the start of autumn in Spain
Autumn officially begins today, Wednesday September 22 2021 at 21 hours and 21 minutes (GMT+1), signalling the end of summer. The autumn season will last for exactly 89 days and 20 hours, and will end on December 21, when winter comes.
By convention, the beginning of autumn arrives when the centre of the Sun, as seen from the Earth, “crosses the celestial equator in its apparent movement towards the south”, according to Spain’s National Astronomical Observatory. For that reason, September 21 is also the autumn equinox, when the tropic of cancer receives 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of darkness. In other words, night and day are the same length today.
When autumn begins in Spain and the rest of the northern hemisphere, it is actually the start of spring in the southern hemisphere. The beginning of autumn, starting on the September equinox, is also the time of the year when the days get shorter fastest.
What’s happening this autumn?
In addition, according to data obtained by the Observatory, this autumn will see a partial lunar eclipse “visible in America, Europe, Asia and Australia”, as well as in Spain, on November 19.
Meanwhile, clocks will go back an hour on Sunday October 31. Specifically, at 3am Central European Time (CET), you will have to put the clocks back to 2am. In the Canary Islands, which works on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), 2am will become 1am.
