A recent study has rounded up the best value for money supermarkets and stores throughout Spain
When shopping in Spain, it is possible to save a whopping 1,073 euros per year on average by choosing the cheaper stores, according to the latest study by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU).
With the price of electricity, fuel and many other common consumer products skyrocketing in recent months, there is finally some good news for shoppers, as the research has compared the cost of food, hygiene and pharmacy products in more than 1,000 well-known establishments to find the best bargains.
The percentage of household income that families in Spain dedicate to their shopping baskets has increased since the coronavirus pandemic, unlike the collapse experienced in other sectors, such as the leisure and travel industries. According to the OCU, the average family now spends at least 4,409 euros annually.
Cheapest supermarkets
Nationally, Alcampo tops the list as the best value for money for the weekly shop in 23 of the towns surveyed, while Mercadona is present in all of the municipalities surveyed and is the cheapest in 17 of them. Well-known supermarket chain Carrefour lags well behind, only offering the most bang for your buck in two towns observed by the OCU study.

Which cities have the cheapest supermarkets?
According to the study by the OCU, “there is a great disparity in the cost of a shopping basket between cities and autonomous communities.”
Jerez de la Frontera is the cheapest city in the study with an index of 100. It is followed by Almería, Castellón, Puertollano, Ciudad Real and Zamora (101).
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Getxo (111) are the most expensive cities.
By Autonomous Communities, the Valencian Community and Murcia are the cheapest, while the Balearic Islands are the most expensive followed by the Canary Islands, the Basque Country and Catalonia.
