ARCHIVED - Tolls in Spain to rise by almost 2 per cent in 2022
Road costs fell slightly in Spain last year after several increases
As virtually everything from electricity to toys has experienced a price hike this year, tolls on motorways in Spain can’t escape the consequences of inflation, with the experts pointing to an average rise of 1.97% next year. Toll costs are reviewed each year based on a number of factors including the average CPI between the months of October this year and last, as well as the amount of use the motorways are subject to.
However, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) can modify the calculation wherever necessary.
This year tolls experienced a slight decrease of 0.11% but if Mitma approves the calculations, the price would return to its usual upward trend. In 2020, toll prices increased on average 0.84%, their lowest level in recent years after the increases of 1.67% and 1.91% experienced in 2019 and 2018.
Although right now only around 5% of Spain's road network is subject to pay-per-use, the authorities are already working on a toll system for all of the country’s high-capacity roads, and the official rates should be ready in the coming months. The objective of this measure, which according to the Government has already been implemented by 24 of the 27 countries of the European Union, is to obtain additional resources to keep the roads in good repair.
To date, there have been many leaked sources claiming that the government will begin with a vignette system before implementing a price per kilometre structure, but the Ministry of Transport has insisted that no concrete decisions have been made.
