ARCHIVED - Transport crisis reduces the supply of booze in Spain
High-alcohol spirits are the most affected alcohol in Spain
With Christmas fast approaching, manufacturers of spirits in Spain are facing a supply crisis as the collapse of the international transport system means they simply can’t get their product to the customer. The executive director of the Espirituosos de España (FEBE) employer, Bosco Torremocha, has categorically stated that the problems with supply are in no way related to an increase in alcohol consumption since Covid restrictions were relaxed.
Earlier this month, consumer organisations linked to toys, food and beverages warned that prices would surely be hiked up this festive season due to increases in the cost of raw materials and a serious delay with transport companies.
The idea that there has been a massive increase in the amount of booze consumed in Spain since nightlife venues reopened is simply untrue, according to Mr Torremocha, who doesn’t expect to see alcohol sales reach the 2019 level until at least the end of next year, if not early 2023. This being said, spirit producers still see a better end to 2021 than last year, when turnover dropped by around 30%.
Nevertheless, income is still expected to be between 12% and 15% below 2019 figures; last year, 141 million litres of spirits were consumed when the amount usually rises to more than 200.
Of course, using 2020 data for comparison purposes is very unhelpful since the hospitality industry throughout Spain was forced to close its doors for months and nightlife all but disappeared. This, along with the 2021 decline in sales will force many companies to close, according to FEBE.
"A stock break is a drama for a company, although if it lasts two weeks it is less tragic than if it lasts three months. It lengthens and you cannot fulfill orders, you do not have invoicing and therefore you have no liquidity”.
