ARCHIVED - Transport sector in Spain to strike for 3 days before Christmas
The strike heightens concerns over a supply shortage in Spain
In the lead-up to Christmas many consumers in Spain are concerned about the impending global supply shortage and the situation has been made all the more concerning by the news that truckers intend to implement a three-day strike right before the culmination of the festive season.
The Goods department of the National Road Transport Committee (CNTC), which represents the sector, announced this week that “it is forced to convene a few days of cessation of activity between midnight of December 19 and midnight of December 22 this year.”
The agency has expressed the frustration of the transport industry with the government, who they feel have not responded adequately to the economic crisis facing the sector, stressing that “only a radical and urgent change on the part of the government and clients could avoid this conflict”.
Several issues, which have been outstanding for nearly two years, have sparked this row, including limitations on the loading and unloading of trucks, the skyrocketing cost of petrol and diesel and the non-implementation of the Eurovignette – a payment system applied to heavy vehicles travelling throughout much of Europe. According to the representatives, the central government has also failed to construct the promised “safe” rest areas for freight professionals.
Vice President of Economic Affairs assured on Thursday November 11 that “there is time to find a solution” to the conflict before the road transport halts activity at Christmas.
"A strike is not desirable during these holidays", Nadia Calviño said after the Committee criticised the “abandonment” of the government.
While the vice president hasn’t specified how the Eurovignette will be implemented, she did agree with truckers that the use of high-capacity roads must be made sustainable for the sector.
To this end, the Spanish Federation for Discretionary Freight Transport (FETRANSA) met with the General Directorate of Transport earlier this week, and while the strike in December is still scheduled, both parties agreed that some progress in the discussions has been made.
