ARCHIVED - Two aircraft depart from Rota, Spain for Ukraine with a consignment of artillery ammunition
Spain is to donate 75 pallets of military material to Ukraine, along with winter uniforms and medical supplies
Two aircraft have left the Rota Naval Base (Cadiz) on Wednesday loaded with large-calibre field artillery ammunition as part of the Spanish donation of weapons to Ukraine, which will be carried out with the support of an allied country.
Rota Naval Base, formally known as Naval Station Rota, is a joint Spanish-US naval base in Andalusia in the south of Spain, not far from Gibraltar, and the largest American military community in Spain.
With the departure of these two planes, the first two out of a total of five or six promised to Ukraine, Spain begins its supply of 75 pallets of ammunition to the war-torn European country.
Spain’s Ministry of Defence has said that Ukrainian authorities have requested this donation “with the highest priority”.
In response to the urgent requirement for material and uniforms that are suitable for winter conditions in Ukraine, the first six trailer trucks have already departed with material prepared by the army throughout the month of August.
A further four trucks are scheduled to leave this coming Monday, making a total of 25, which will transport more than 1,600 pallets over the next few days.
Likewise, in response to an express request made yesterday by the Ukrainian Defence Minister during a ministerial meeting in Prague involving Spain’s Defence Minister Margarita Robles, Spain will send a package of medical material before September 6.
All these shipments are an example of “Spain’s decisive and sustained support over time for the Ukrainian people,” according to Ms Robles.
The Spanish government is mired in controversy over its military spending, having increased its defence spending to 2% of GDP in the coming years in line with a commitment made to NATO, despite promises of a spending ceiling.
