ARCHIVED - Vueling to operate flights from Corvera airport to Barcelona, Bilbao and Santander starting June 18
Currently traffic at Corvera airport is virtually non-existent with the British government maintaining its ban on international holidays
Although the British government presented its long-awaited traffic light system on Friday, there is still no clear indication of whether flights to Spain will be able to resume as anticipated from May 17th onwards.
Corvera airport relies almost entirely on flights from the UK for its traffic, as a result of which the airport is at an almost total standstill, the only traffic currently being processed the weekly Binter airline flight to the Canary Islands.
This resulted in a spectacular 98 per cent fall in passenger traffic during February at the airport with just 28 passengers a day using the 200 million euros airport.
However, hopes are high that once the British government finally gives the go-ahead for international holidays to resume, that aircraft will replace sparrows on the runway and the airport will spring back to life.
In the meantime, domestic tourism is likely to be the principal focus of the tourist sector this summer, and for this reason Vueling, which belongs to IAG, has announced
that it is putting three new routes on sale from Murcia, connecting Corvera airport with Barcelona, Bilbao and Santander as of June 18.
This is the first time that Vueling has planned to operate these routes from Murcia and although undoubtedly the idea is to lure residents from these areas to the sunny shores of Murcia, it’s also a good opportunity for residents of the region to take a few short trips away of their own to interesting cities with plenty to see and do.
The new route to Barcelona will operate on Friday and Sunday.
Santander and Murcia will also be united as of June 19 with two weekly services on Tuesday and Saturday and the connection with Bilbao will begin on June 20 with flights every Thursday and Sunday.
