ARCHIVED - WATCH: Europol most wanted fugitive arrested at Madrid airport after 10 years on the run
The Hungarian fugitive was detained at Madrid-Barajas airport after debarking a flight from the Dominican Republic
After a decade on the run, a Hungarian fugitive, one of Europol's Most Wanted, has been arrested at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, Spain.
The arrested woman was sentenced in her native country to more than 10 years in prison for several financial crimes and is also accused of forgery, fraud and swindling.
For the latter three offences, which are still open cases, she faces further jail terms of sentences of at least 15 years.
The fugitive, a specialist in banking relations and credit fraud, according to the Hungarian authorities, swindled more than two million euros from unsuspecting victims in collaboration with two other people between 2005 and 2012.
The trio created several shell companies to try to cover their tracks and add an air of legitimacy.
Following the detainee's first convictions in mid-2012, and prior to imprisonment, she fled Hungary without a trace and her whereabouts were unknown until the her arrest in Madrid.
It was initially suspected that she was hiding out in Thailand, where one of her associates had been arrested, but after further inquiries earlier this year, authorities were confident she had made her way to the Dominican Republic.
According to the National Police, she was living under the protection of an influential Hungarian community, leading an apparently normal family life under a false identity. She had married a Dominican man and had a daughter.

The Dominican and Spanish authorities set up a joint operation and her attempts to flee to Spain were thwarted after she disembarked from a flight at Madrid-Barajas airport.
The arrested woman "had been evading justice for more than ten years, managing to reach different countries and having easy access to falsified documentation, which made her detection very difficult," said Spanish authorities.
Last month, another of Europol's Most Wanted fugitives was arrested in Murcia after spending almost a year on the run. The Dutch man had fled to Spain in 2022 after being convicted on two armed robberies, one of which resulted in the violent death of a store clerk.
