ARCHIVED - Wolf hunting continues to be banned in Spain
Compensation packages will be available to farmers in Spain for wolf attacks on livestock
The Congress in Spain this week rejected the PP’s attempt to overturn an order issued nine months ago by the Ministry of Ecological Transition to ban wolf hunting across all of Spain, placing this animal on the list of protected species.
Wolf hunting is a long-standing debate in this country: on the one hand, farmers consider the wild animal to be nothing more than vermin, decimating their livestock populations, while naturalists want to uphold the ban in order to protect this endangered species.
The opposition wanted to completely reverse the ban, claiming that the government doesn’t provide enough aid to farmers to cover the 40-odd daily attacks on cattle, sheep, goats and horses.
However, upon upholding the prohibition on wolf hunting throughout Spain, the Ministry pointed out that a national plan has been implemented that will release 20 million euros so that farms can equip themselves with protection measures for livestock (modern fencing, GPS monitoring etc), as well as an additional 20 million to compensate for damage caused by attacks on herds.
The government will also allocate 664,000 euros to carry out an updated census of the wolf in Spain, with data on specimens, packs and their location, which will allow for more realistic planning.
According to the last count in 2014, more than 60% of the 297 wolf packs in Spain were concentrated in León, Palencia and Zamora, followed by Galicia, with 28% of the predators.
