ARCHIVED - Arrested: Murcia gang that used minors for break-ins and armed robberies
The criminal gang is allegedly responsible for at least nine robberies in Totana and Alhama de Murcia
Murcia police have arrested seven suspected members of a gang that used minors to carry out a series of robberies with force in Totana and Alhama de Murcia.
They have been charged with crimes of robbery, mugging, intimidation using a firearm, theft, causing damage and being members of a criminal group, with two of the detainees already being remanded in prison.
The Guardia Civil began an investigation last November, following a robbery at a betting shop in Alhama de Murcia during which a member of staff was threatened with a gun.
Within days an arcade was held-up in the same town and a nearby pharmacy was robbed twice, again using intimidation.
Investigators summarised the gang knew the area and, after taking witness statements and scouring CCTV images, realised minors were being used to commit the robberies.
According to a police statement, once they had selected a target premises and confirmed there were no customers inside, underage hooded males wielding knives and even firearms intimidated staff into handing over the contents of the till.
“The group had a well-defined organisational structure, where the adults were the ringleaders who selected the targets, directing and planning the modus operandi, and minors were used to carry out the crime.”
Eventually, seven suspected Spanish and Moroccan gang members aged 14 to 22 and residents of Alhama de Murcia and Fuente Alamo were identified and arrested.
The case is being dealt with by the Court of Instruction of Totana and the Prosecutor's Office for Minors of Murcia.
