Only twelve of the immigrants on board survived the deadly voyage to Spain
At least 44 irregular immigrants have drowned after their small boat capsized on Sunday May 8 as they were trying to reach the Canary Islands. The migrants perished off the coast of the city of Bojador in Western Sahara around 190 kilometres south of El Aaiun.
A spokesperson for the group for the defence of migrants Caminando Frontersa reported the tragedy at the weekend, confirming that seven bodies had been recovered from the sea and transferred to the morgue, while the rest are still unaccounted for.
It hasn’t been revealed whether there were any children among their number, but 12 migrants survived the shipwreck and have been arrested by the Moroccan authorities.
