The ruins of the Castillo de San Juan in Calasparra are home to a striking open air auditorium, used for cultural events and concerts during the summer months.
The auditorium comprises semi-circular concrete and marble-capped seating, so although cool for those warm summer nights it is improved dramatically by the addition of a soft cushion: take one with you if attending a concert!
The auditorium has been designed to offer stunning views across the open countryside while enjoying the performance, but being right on top of a hill means that there is only one way to get there, and that is uphill. There is a back road up to venue but very limited parking, and it is still a rough track and therefore very difficult for those with limited mobility.
On foot, follow the road up the side of the Iglesia de San Pedro, and wind on up the hill. Allow a good 15-20 minutes for the walk up.
