ARCHIVED - August 15 is a public holiday in Spain: everything you need to know about the summer puente
The feast of the Assumption of the Virgin will be marked by a three-day weekend in Spain this year

Quite aside from being the very height of the summer season, the month of August in Spain is rich with festivals and festivities, from the street parties of the Virgen Blanca in Vitoria to the chain of celebrations in Madrid to mark San Lorenzo and the Virgen de la Paloma.
This coming Monday August 15 is another important event on Spain’s festival calendar as it commemorates the Assumption of the Virgin and because it falls on the first day of the week, most workers in Spain will enjoy a three-day ‘bridge’, or long weekend.
August 15 is also a ‘red day’ throughout Spain without exception, meaning that banks, public administration buildings and many shops will be closed across the country. Several of the larger supermarkets do actually open on national holidays, some for limited hours, so it’s always worth checking with your local stores to be on the safe side.
The 2022 work calendar in Spain includes a total of 14 holidays. Of these, eight are enjoyed across the country while the others are regional. This year we have already celebrated three national holidays: January 1 (New Year), January 6 (Epiphany of the Lord) and April 15 (Good Friday).
After Monday’s Assumption of the Virgin, we have to wait until October 12 for the next Spanish National Holiday.
The August 15 puente corresponds to Catholic doctrine and tradition and remembers the Virgin Mary’s ascension into heaven.
Once we’re passed the National Holiday in October, the countdown to the arrival of a new year will begin, with only four major Spanish holidays remaining: All Saints’ Day on November 1, Constitution Day on December 6, the Immaculate Conception on the 8th and the Monday after Christmas Day, December 26, which is kept in the majority of regions.
