ARCHIVED - August 19, the free Mr Gillman and the Railways guided tour of Aguilas
A fascinating trip through the history of the railway in the coastal port of Águilas
This free monthly tour (in Spanish) shows participants the history of the traders and industrialists who played such an important role in the economy of Águilas in the second half of the 19th century and the first 30 years of the 20th, among them Gustavo Gillman. The route includes the Monument to the Railways, the bridge over the Rambla de las Culebras, the Sendero del Hornillo, the museum which has been created in the railway tunnel, the emblematic Embarcadero del Hornillo loading jetty and the railway station.
The visit starts at the Renfe railway station in Águilas at 19.00 and lasts for approximately 2 hours.
Bookings should be made through the Region of Murcia tourist board here from approximately one month prior to the date of the event.
The visit is free, although the town would appreciate visitors enjoying a good lunch out in the town afterwards or staying in the town – the tourist office will be happy to provide you with details of where a good lunch can be obtained and accommodation details!

Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)
Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.
The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
