August 20 Free guided hike to the highest point in Cartagena, behind La AzohÃa and Isla Plana
From the top of Peñas Blancas it's possible to see as far as the Sierra Nevada in Granada!
Peñas Blancas is the name given to the highest point in the municipality of Cartagena, reaching 627 metres above sea level, and there are two great ways to admire the abrupt chalk face which rises above the land below.
The first is to take a hike along the Rambla del Cañar, a reed-filled water channel which runs from the village of Tallante to the coast between Isla Plana and La Azohía. Here the landscape is dominated by the steep rock face, which casts shade over the valley for much of the day.
The other way is simple enough: walk up to the top! This is not quite as easy as it sounds, but the tourist office of Mazarrón is holding this guided hike on Thursday 20th August to help you pick out a route through the slopes and shrubs (and in some places, the remains of old mine buildings and machinery) which stand in your way. Once you’re up there, you won’t actually be able to see the cliff face - it's below you! - but on a clear day you will be able to see Puerto de Mazarrón, La Azohía, Isla Plana and Cabo Cope near Águilas, and if you’re lucky you can even make out La Manga, Cabo de Gata in Almería, the mountains of Sierra Nevada in Granada and (allegedly!) the coastline of Oran in north Africa!
The 8.5-km hike begins at 18.00, starting at a location which will be disclosed to participants after registration (which is free of charge and available online here). Please note that dogs are not permitted and appropriate hiking gear is absolutely necessary, as is at least a litre of drinking water. The hike ends at the starting point and the guide will be speaking in Spanish, but the views speak for themselves!
A head torch is recommended!
