Barcelona Airport security threatens strikes from August 10
The indefinite work stoppages at Barcelona-El Prat Airport are scheduled to run five days a week
The Labour Department has called an urgent meeting for next week with security company I-SEC AVIATION SECURITY SL in a latch-ditch bid at negotiations that would prevent Barcelona airport security staff going on strike from Thursday August 10.
Countless flights arriving in and departing from Spain have seen massive delays in recent days as a result of industrial action at UK airports and if the Barcelona strikes go ahead, they’re expected to cause a knock-on effect up and down the country.
Negotiations are due to take place on Monday August 7 but demands are high. The CSIF union, which represents the majority of Barcelona’s security staff, claims that "the company does not respect staff breaks, nor family reconciliation and that abuse of authority and pressure on subordinates are exercised by some managers."
They also want the employers to pay for staff parking, increase wages across the board and give a monthly 50 euro bonus to staff who speak more than one language. Another request is that workers be given two weekends off every month.
If the talks end in stalemate, the indefinite strikes will be organised into three batches and will run on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays: from four in the morning to seven in the morning, from nine in the morning to eleven in the morning and from four in the afternoon to six in the afternoon.
In 2019, these same workers went on strike to demand wage and labour improvements, after mediation meetings between the company and unions failed. And two years before that, in the summer of 2017, the workers at the El Prat security controls, then under the umbrella of the Eulen company, supported a strike that caused serious problems in the airport's operations at one of the busiest times of year for Spanish tourism.
