ARCHIVED - Beachfront holiday rentals in Spain are almost 10 per cent more expensive than last year
Hotel bookings in Spain have now quadrupled and prices have risen by 22.1%
The Spanish tourism sector is angling to recover most, if not all, of its pre-pandemic business and things certainly appear to be moving in the right direction, as the price of renting a beachfront holiday home this summer has risen by 9.7% to an average of 1,016 euros. That’s 90 euros more expensive than last year and a staggering 190 euros more than in 2020.
According to the ‘Coastal Rental’ report by Tecnitasa, these prices have been inching up in recent years, and for many families wishing to holiday in Spain, it means finding smaller properties or moving further inland.
The report shows that Catalonia is the region where rental prices will see the biggest hikes this July and August compared to last year, with an increase of up to 15.2% for beachside properties. At the other end of the scale, Cantabria has experienced a decrease of 0.8%. Likewise, demand for coastal rentals in the Region of Murcia has dropped by half a percentage, possibly as a result of the continuous pollution of the Mar Menor.
Tourists hoping to save a buck by opting instead for a hotel this summer will also be disappointed, as prices for overnight stays across Spain have jumped up by 22.1%.
In May alone, the number of hotel bookings exceeded 29.8 million, quadrupling the figures from 2021.
Despite this strong rebound, the overnight stays registered in last month in Spanish hotels are still lower than the figures of May last year, when 31.9 million rooms were booked. Of the total so far this year, foreign tourists accounted for 19.8 million bookings, with the Balearic Islands again topping the list of the most desired destination, followed by the Canary Islands and Catalonia.
