ARCHIVED - Black and white: DGT fines for cyclists and scooters at zebra crossings
Not giving way to pedestrians at zebra crossings in Spain could cost you 200 euros
Anyone who drives regularly in Spain will by now be well used to the regular guidance issued by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) to ensure that the roads are kept safe, and the barrage of fines that awaits any rule breakers. But certain hard and fast regulations are also aimed at cyclists and electric scooter users, and ignoring them can quickly land riders in hot water with the traffic authorities.
When it comes to zebra crossings in Spain, the rules are pretty much black and white: pedestrians always have right of way, unless there are traffic lights that regulate the flow of people and vehicles.
In the absence of lights, all vehicles without exception, including bicycles and scooters, must give way to people on foot who are using the zebra crossing.
Although the procedure is cut and dried, it’s fairly common practice for many scooter riders and cyclists to ignore the zebra crossing rules. If caught, the DGT can dole out fines to rule-breakers of 200 euros.
The traffic authorities have recently issued a reminder on their social media and although it’s applicable to all drivers, the DGT chose this time to specifically address cyclists with the following message:
“If you travel by bicycle, remember that you must give way at a duly marked pedestrian crossing. Also when you turn to enter another road and there are pedestrians crossing it, even if there is no crossing. The penalty for not respecting the priority of pedestrians: 200 euros.”
On a related note, cyclists wanting to cross the road using a zebra crossing must dismount from their bikes and walk; it’s absolutely forbidden to ride a bike through a pedestrian crossing and this will also result in a 200 euro penalty.
