Blue skies and soaring temperatures: Spain weather forecast March 14-17
The mercury will shoot up into the mid- to high-20s in most parts of Spain this weekend
Weather outlook on Sunday March 17
After a prolonged period of wintry weather, Storm Monica has finally bid adieu to Spain, leaving behind a trail of chilly temperatures, rain and frost throughout the country. However, a significant shift in temperature is on the horizon, as predicted by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). In the coming days, a powerful ridge will bring about a dramatic rise in nearly all regions, causing thermometers to soar to 5-10ºC above average.
This warming trend will be particularly pronounced in inland municipalities of Murcia and eastern Andalucia, where daytime temperatures are expected to surge by up to 12°C above the seasonal norm.
This spell of unusually warm weather is expected to last until at least March 17, with temperatures reaching their peak this Sunday.
Thursday March 14
Although high pressures will predominate on Thursday, the entry of a fairly inactive Atlantic front could lead to increased cloud cover from west to east early in the day, especially on the Atlantic coast.
Scattered showers are possible in the northwest but the rest of the country should remain dry.
Temperatures will remain steady or decrease slightly on the Atlantic coast and the Canary Islands, while rising on the Mediterranean coast. Overnight temperatures will see a slight increase, with frosts confined to the Pyrenees.
Friday March 15
Cloudy skies will prevail on the Atlantic coast, the Upper Ebro region and the Pyrenees, with a chance of scattered showers in the northeast. The western third of the country, including the Balearic Islands, will enjoy increasing temperatures during the day and minimum temperatures will rise overall, except for small drops in the far north and southwest.
Saturday March 16
A new front will bring cloudy skies to the northwest Spain on Saturday morning, possibly extending to other areas later. Maximum temperatures will climb across the board, most notably in the eastern Canary Islands, where the mercury could soar past 30ºC.
There will be a very slight drop along the Mediterranean coast, but even here the thermometers shouldn’t fall much below 22 or 23ºC.
Sunday March 17
As the country gears up to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Sunday, high pressure systems will dominate the weather, yielding mostly clear skies and plenty of bright, sunny spells.
An Atlantic front may brush the northwest, bringing abundant cloud cover and a chance of morning showers in northwestern Galicia.
Temperatures will continue their upward climb, and large parts of Andalucia and the Region of Murcia will touch 30ºC.
