ARCHIVED - Boat captain jailed for death of migrant baby in Spain
The child and a woman drowned as their illegal boat was approaching the Canary Islands from Morocco
A Moroccan man has been sentenced to eight years in prison by the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands for piloting an illegal migrant boat which resulted in the death of a one-year-old baby girl and a woman.
The tragic event occurred in May 2019 when a dinghy carrying 24 passengers attempted to land on the coast of Gran Canaria near Arguineguin after travelling from Morocco. As it reached the shore, the flimsy boat hit rocks and the woman and baby were swept overboard and drowned.
The captain of the boat has been convicted of a crime against the rights of workers and two crimes of reckless homicide. He has also been ordered to pay a total of 165,000 euros in compensation to the relatives of the two victims.
