Bomb scare in centre of Cartagena this Wednesday
After evacuation of the area and a controlled detonation, it was revealed to be just a case of abandoned items in a busy street
This Wednesday afternoon, January 8, the National Police cordoned off Calle Puerta de Murcia in central Cartagena after an anonymous call reported two suspicious briefcases at a busy street corner.
The area, home to the Capitanía General, was swiftly evacuated, and officers ensured that no one entered the street while awaiting the arrival of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technicians (TEDAX).Shops in the area were temporarily closed, and employees left the premises as a safety measure. The suspicious items were located on a bustling street, prompting quick action to safeguard the public.Upon inspection, the briefcases appeared to be linked to the Eunea brand, commonly associated with electrical mechanisms. Items from the Unica Plus range, likely products related to this brand, were reportedly scattered on the ground nearby.TEDAX carried out a controlled detonation at around 6.20pm to neutralise any potential risk. Following the operation, the National Police confirmed that the briefcases contained no hazardous materials and were merely “effects abandoned in the street”.Despite the safety cordon, onlookers gathered nearby, many startled by the sound of the detonation. The police have since completed the security operation, and Calle Puerta de Murcia has been reopened to the public.Image: Google Maps
