Bottled gas cylinders in Spain drop to lowest price in a year
The cost of a standard gas canister in Spain has fallen by 5% to just 15.18 euros
Those planning on sparking up the barbecue and dining outdoors during the latest heatwave can do so on the cheap from this week on as the maximum price of butane cylinders has dropped by a significant 4.89%. As of Tuesday July 18, the most shops and service stations will be allowed to charge for a standard bottle of gas is 15.18 euros.
Despite the fact that the cost of shipping gas canisters has risen by 16.6%, the price of raw materials has dipped substantially, by around 25%. This, coupled with the appreciation of the euro against the dollar (+0.2%) has allowed the retail price of gas to fall.
The maximum sale price of bottled liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) in containers of between 8 and 20 kilograms, the traditional butane cylinder, has varied widely in recent years since its cost is reviewed bimonthly, but this is the cheapest it has been in 12 months.
This price review is calculated based on the cost of raw materials (propane and butane) in international markets, as well as the cost of transportation and the evolution of the euro-dollar exchange rate.
Although gas bottles are popular for outdoor cooking in the summer and heating homes in the winter, particularly in larger towns and cities, LPG is actually a fuel in decline. According to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, around 64.5 million gas canisters of different sizes are consumed in Spain each year, a number that has fallen by more than 25% between 2010 and 2021.
