Winter is only just around the corner and with the promise of more cold weather setting in, there’s some good news for households as butane has taken a considerable price dip. From Tuesday November 15, the maximum price of a 12.5kg canister will drop by 4.96% to stand at 18.58 euros.

What’s more, this cost cap has been set until January 17 next year, when the next price review will take place.

This is the first time the cost of butane has dropped in two years and the reduction is thanks to the fact that raw materials in the international market have dipped by a significant 10% in the last couple of months.

Bottled bottled liquefied petroleum gases (LPGs) which are a mixture of hydrocarbons, mainly composed of butane, were traditionally used widely in Spain for cooking and home heating. The larger canisters are also used in many restaurants. Back in June, largely in response to the war in Ukraine and its far-reaching financial implication, the government put a price cap on all cylinders weighing between 8kg and 20kg.

Currently, 68 million LPG containers of different capacities are consumed in Spain, of which 53 million are subject to the maximum regulated price (78%). It is a fuel in decline, with consumption dropping by 20% between 2009 and 2018.

In far less welcome news, the Spanish government has again hinted this week that it plans to drastically reduce the availability of the 20 cent per litre fuel discount, with officials considering limiting the bonus to the most vulnerable groups.
