ARCHIVED - Brit, 25, killed in Spain after plummeting from Devil Pass mountain
The limestone peak draws daring mountaineers from all across Spain

A young British man has been killed while attempting to climb the notorious Devil’s Pass, or Paso del Diablo, a 4,367-metre limestone mountain in the Basque area of Anboto. The 25-year-old’s body was found by a rescue team on Friday morning, June 24.
According to official reports, the Briton began the difficult climb with a pal the previous day and decided to try and reach the top by himself after his friend turned back. The mountain is usually tackled by experienced mountaineers, but initial information suggests that both men worked as delivery drivers, and were staying at a hotel in Eibar, an industrial town located in the province of Gipuzkoa.
A spokesperson for the regional police confirmed: “Emergency services have located the lifeless body of the mountaineer who we had been searching for since Thursday evening.
“The alarm was raised around 8.30pm, saying the 25-year-old had gone missing near to the Alluitz mountain summit.
“A police helicopter found his body in a place called the canal de Infernu Zubi, near to the Alluitz peak, where it appears he could have suffered a fall.”
It is believed that the young Brit may have been trying to descend from Devil’s Pass when a storm hit, making the way treacherous.
Speaking about the climb after another mountaineer lost his life a few years ago, the president of the Basque Country’s mountain federation said: “It’s not a difficult pass to cross but it is dangerous. It’s not for mountaineers who suffer from vertigo.”
