Brit arrested in Ibiza following fatal cyclist hit and run
A well-known local cyclist died instantly after being struck by a Jeep in the Sant Josep neighbourhood of Ibiza
A massive manhunt was launched on Tuesday evening, June 27, after a right-hand drive Jeep Wrangler with British plates ploughed into two cyclists in the Sant Josep municipality of Ibiza and fled the scene.
Bernat Ribas, 49, a well-known cyclist and all-round athlete, was killed instantly by the violent impact but his companion Toni Tur ‘Sopes’ was thankfully uninjured.
According to Toni and the driver of another vehicle, who had to swerve to avoid the fatal accident, the Jeep sped away from the narrow road known as the Camino de Benimussa. It was later found crashed around 10 minutes away from the scene of the hit and run, but their was no sign of the motorist.
However, close to midnight on Wednesday June 28, a 35-year-old British man, named only as SD, handed himself into police in Sant Antoni and he is being held on suspicion of crimes of reckless homicide, leaving the scene of the accident, reckless driving and driving without authorisation.
Tributes have been flowing in for Mr Ribas, whose funeral will take place on June 30.
“Bernat was living his moment. He was winning races, enjoying himself, having a great time… Now we have a star in the sky that will illuminate all of us,” Luis Miguel Marty, a friend and president of the CE Master Team, said.
Just six years ago, cyclist Daniel Viñals died after being run over, and athletics groups all over Ibiza have called on the government to take harsher action against the perpetrators, with cycling tours director Juanjo Planells not hesitating to describe what happened as “murder”.
“We must condemn these types of acts that cannot go unpunished. How many times does something as unpleasant as this have to happen? We continue the same, we have not made any progress, we have not hardened the penalties. There will come a time when we will not be able to go for a bike ride. This murder must be condemned,” he said.
