Brit rental car driver smashes into Fuerteventura bar terrace, injuring eight
A four-month-baby was rushed to hospital after the English tourist lost control in the Canary Islands resort
Eight people have been injured, including a four-month-old infant, when a hire car allegedly being driven by a holidaymaker from the UK ploughed into a bar terrace in the popular resort of Fuerteventura.
According to eye-witnesses, the rental vehicle lost control on a central street near Corralejo and crashed through a packed outdoor terrace before smashing into the front wall of the pub. The same sources speculated that the car must have been travelling between 50 or 60mph down the busy Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen when it careened over the footpath and into the crowd.
The baby was rushed by paramedics to Gran Canaria’s Child and Maternity Hospital while several more injured bar customers were airlifted to Las Palmas Hospital’s emergency unit.
Another five year old child was hurt in the accident and two men, aged 44 and 50, also sustained moderate trauma. One of people taken to hospital is believed to be the driver of the rental car and while it’s not clear why he lost control, well-placed sources suggest he may have suffered a heart attack behind the wheel.
The Mayor of La Oliva said in a statement on Thursday evening, August 31: “Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event.
“We are working closely with the relevant authorities to clarify what happened and provide support to the victims and their families at this difficult time”.
The City Council added: “We are working tirelessly to obtain more information about what happened and take the necessary measures to prevent similar situations in the future”.
