British couple killed in horror motorbike crash on holiday in Spain
The tourists skidded off their motorcycle during a period of torrential rain in northern Spain
A British couple has died in the municipality of Llanes in northern Spain after falling off their motorbike on the A-8 motorway. The fatal accident occurred at around 5.30pm on Monday September 11 in the autonomous community of Asturias, where a yellow weather alert was in place for torrential rain and thunder storms.
According to witnesses of the tragic event, the woman (65) was hit by another car after being spilled onto the tarmac and firefighters had to cut her body free from the underneath of the vehicle. Her 68-year-old partner was reportedly hit by a passing lorry.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil, which is carrying out an investigation into the accident, said:
“Two British nationals have died in an accident on the A8 motorway in the municipality of Llanes, near the Balmori exit.
“They were a couple aged 68 and 65.
“They were heading west in the direction of the provincial capital Oviedo when the motorbike they were on overturned for reasons which are still being investigated.”
Officials believe the British couple was holidaying in the northern town of Llanes, which is a popular tourist destination and widely considered to be one of the most picturesque coastal municipalities in Spain.
The area is famous for its cluster of huge luxury villas, known locally as the ‘Indianas’, as the opulent homes were built by returning locals who had emigrated to the Americas to seek their fortunes.
