ARCHIVED - British F35 jet crashes into the Mediterranean
The pilot was rescued after ejecting himself from the aircraft
A British government-owned F35 jet crashed into the Mediterranean sea on Wednesday morning, November 17, shortly after taking off from the deck of the HMS Queen Elizabeth for a routine flight. The pilot, who was forced to eject himself from the plane before it went down, was rescued from the water and transferred back to the ship unharmed.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the pilot was safe and that an investigation had begun into the cause of the accident, but refused to comment further.

The pilot has been safely returned to the ship and an investigation has begun, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.
The fifth-generation RAF F35 jet is a stealthy, single-seat multipurpose fighter aircraft specifically designed to cover both reconnaissance and defence aerial missions. The plane departed from the HMS Queen Elizabeth which is a large aircraft carrier built for the Royal Navy that originally launched on July 4 2014.
