British man sentenced to 10 years in Spain for knife attack on a child
The UK citizen stabbed the 6-year-old with a 12-inch knife outside his Madrid school
A British man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempting to murder a 6-year-old child near a school in Madrid. The attacker, identified only as Albal Z, stabbed the child with a 12-inch kitchen knife before discarding the weapon in a nearby rubbish bin and fleeing the scene.
The young victim required an emergency operation for neck wounds and was left with both physical and emotional scars.
The attack occurred on December 10, 2021, as the child was walking back to his private British international school, Hastings School, after a PE lesson. Albal Z, who has a history of prior arrests in the UK, was arrested 12 days later and was subsequently charged with attempted murder.
Police said of the attack in the indictment: “In a surprise manner and with the intention of ending his life, he swooped on the youngster from behind, without the youngster seeing him or being able to react.”
According to testimony provided by a police officer during the trial, the assault on the 6-year-old boy was not a spontaneous act, but rather part of a premeditated plan. The officer stated that Albal Z had been seen in the same neighbourhood, Chamartin, two days prior to the attack, suggesting that he had been planning the assault in advance.
During the trial, public prosecutors argued for a 15-year prison sentence for the Kosovo-born Briton, citing the severity of the attack and the fact that the defendant suffers from paranoid schizophrenia which affected his perception of reality. However, the court ultimately decided on a 10-year sentence, taking into account the defendant’s mental health issues.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Albal Z to pay the victim’s family 45,000 euros (£38,500) in compensation. The court also ruled that the attacker would be expelled from Spain upon completion of his sentence and ordered him to stay away from the victim for 15 years.
