British soldier who slashed throat of friend avoids jail time in Spain

British soldier Sydney Cole, 24, has narrowly escaped three years in a Spanish prison after she admitted to slashing her pal, Lance Corporal Sarah Garrity, with a broken glass in Magaluf. Her friend lost four pints of blood and needed 14 stitches after the attack.
Following an all-day drinking session on April 15, 2019, a row broke out between the girls in the Banana’s nightclub which resulted in Sarah’s grievous injuries. While several witnesses claim Cole intentionally threw the glass directly at her fellow Briton, she insisted her pal had been accidentally hurt when it smashed on the floor during the physical altercation.
And although the victim refused to press charges, Spanish police warned Cole back in August that she was still facing serious prison time for the assault.
“Sarah told the police not to charge Cole because she didn’t want to see a young girl banged up in a jail abroad,” a relative of the victim said shortly after the assault.
“She expected her to be full of remorse but didn’t even get an apology.”
However, on November 3, the Spanish authorities decided against a custodial sentence and instead ordered the soldier to pay 900 euros in compensation at a rate of five euros per day. In return, Cole had to admit to wounding her friend.
“I’m happy with the way this case has been resolved and Sydney is very happy obviously not to be going to prison,” Cole's lawyer Gloria Olmos said after the hearing.
“A fine is the lowest punishment she could have got and if this had gone to a full trial she would have been looking at a possible three-year prison sentence if convicted.”
