British toddler dies after falling into swimming pool at Málaga holiday home
The three-year-old boy had arrived at the rural property in Periana with his parents just the day before the tragedy
A three-year-old British boy has died after falling into a swimming pool at a rural holiday home in Periana, a village in the La Axarquía region of Málaga province, roughly 50 kilometres north-east of the city. The emergency call was made to 112 at 8.30am on Wednesday June 17. The 061 Health Emergency Centre responded immediately, dispatching a medical helicopter, the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local to the scene. Despite the swift response and the efforts of all emergency personnel, the boy could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Local reports indicate the family had only arrived at the farmhouse the previous day, Tuesday June 16, making the tragedy all the more devastating. The boy is understood to have been the couple's only child.
The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, though sources close to the case have indicated there is no evidence of criminal activity at this stage. A post-mortem examination will be carried out by the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Málaga to formally establish the cause of death. One source said: "Investigators are still awaiting the results of the post-mortem but it appears to be a tragic accident."
The community of Periana has responded with deep sadness. The Ayuntamiento issued a formal statement extending its condolences to the family, and Mayoress Meritxell Vizueta visited the property in person alongside a councillor to offer comfort to the grieving parents.
The Ayuntamiento's statement read: "Today is a deeply sad day for our town. On behalf of Periana Town Council, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the child who has passed away. There are no words that can ease such immense grief, but we do wish to convey to you all our love, support and solidarity at this very difficult time. The whole of Periana shares your sadness and stands with you in your grief at such a painful and unjust loss."
The family are understood to be receiving support from a local priest.
