British tourist arrested for failing to pay compensation after killing a man on the Costa del Sol
The Briton killed a Spanish man with a single punch on a night out in the Malaga town of Fuengirola
The authorities in the UK have arrested 50-year-old British man Mark T and are arranging his extradition to Spain, where he will stand trial for failing to pay compensation to the family of a man he killed in Fuengirola back in 2018. The courts agreed to suspend the Briton’s two-year prison sentence, provided he pay compensation of 183,500 euros.
To date, Mark T has failed to come up with a single euro and several arrest warrants were issued to locate him. This week, Interpol notified the Spanish authorities of his arrest.
Mark T was tried in 2020 and convicted by the Costa del Sol courts of killing 66-year-old Mario Sauco, a married father of three who looked after his grandchildren during the day so his daughters could work.
Both the victim and his killer were drinking in a bar in Fuengirola on that fateful night, Mark T with family and friends. After Mario left the pub, someone told the British man that the Spaniard “got heavy” with one of the tourist’s daughters, and Mark T followed him into the street to confront him.
Mark T punched the older man in the face without warning. He was knocked out and banged his head on the ground when he fell. Mario was admitted to hospital in a coma and died eight days later.
The court sentence stated: "There is no evidence of any kind of abuse or sexual advances towards the attacker's daughters."
In order to secure the suspended sentences, the British man was ordered to pay Mario’s family 60 monthly instalments of 3,051 euros, but he never made a single payment.
"He killed my father and now he is laughing at us and at Spanish justice,” Mario’s daughter Verónica said.
Now, justice is close for the deceased man’s family, as extradition proceedings have been initiated by the UK authorities to transfer Mark T back to Spain to face the music.
