British tourist dies after sea rescue at Tenerife beach
75-year-old man pulled unconscious from Playa del Duque unable to be revived
A British holidaymaker has died following a rescue from the sea at Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje, south Tenerife, on Tuesday January 20 at around 12.50pm.Initial reports listed the man as 70, but sources later confirmed he was a 75-year-old British national who had celebrated his birthday less than two weeks earlier.
He was found in cardiac arrest by beach lifeguards. A regional government emergency centre spokesman said: "The man died after being rescued at El Duque beach when he had gone into cardiac arrest. He was initially assisted by lifeguards before ambulance staff together with a doctor and a nurse from a nearby health centre arrived and continued with CPR which proved unsuccessful."
Emergency resources were mobilised swiftly after the first alert reached CECOES 1-1-2, the Canary Islands' coordination centre. These included ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service for advanced and basic life support, plus a doctor and nurse from Adeje Health Centre. Despite prolonged resuscitation efforts on site, the man could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Playa del Duque, a Blue Flag urban beach popular with tourists, is known for its strong sea currents. Local Police assisted with operations on the beach, while the Policía Nacional took charge of the investigation and body removal pending an autopsy in Santa Cruz. It remains unclear if the man was swimming alone or with others.
