ARCHIVED - British tourist repeatedly stabbed by Barcelona bag snatchers
The holidaymaker was having a drink on a Las Ramblas terrace when the thieves struck
A brave British holidaymaker has suffered several stab wounds after trying to fight off a gang of thieves in Barcelona. The tourist was having a drink on an outdoor terrace in Placa Sant Josep Oriol near the popular Las Ramblas at around 8pm on Thursday September 1 when his bag was snatched.
The victim pursued the robbers and even managed to tackle one in front of a group of shocked onlookers, when one of the thieves pulled a sharp object from his pocket and repeatedly tried to stab the Briton, eventually making contact with his torso.
While grappling with his assailants, the tourist can be heard shouting: “Where’s my s**t, where’s my necklace, where the f**k is it.”
The vicious attack was filmed and shared on social media by another British man, who can clearly be heard warning off the perpetrators: “You’re on camera bro, you want to give it back mate.”
Upon seeing the blade being brandished in front of his face, the victim released his attackers and they ran off; one heroic passerby tried to stop them without success. Luckily, Barcelona Police arrested the four thieves a short time later and the victim, who was not seriously injured, had his stolen goods returned.
An official spokesperson confirmed the details: “Our officers made two of the arrests and the other two arrests were carried out by the Guardia Urbana.
“I can confirm the victim was taken to hospital with stab wounds but his injuries were not serious.
“His stolen belongings were recovered when the men were arrested. They are in custody and will now go before a judge.”
Details about the suspects’ ages and nationalities have not been released.
The Catalonian capital is experiencing a crime surge this summer, with around 225 robberies reported in Barcelona each and every day.
Back in June, an American tourist out walking with his family after dinner had his luxury watch, valued at almost a million euros, literally stripped from his wrist as his terrified children looked on. The mugging took place in the city’s central Gothic Quarter, the Barri Gòtic, the same area where this latest theft occurred.
