ARCHIVED - British tourists face hefty fines if caught urinating in the Spanish sea
Spain is enforcing several new measures to stamp out disorderly behaviour this summer
Spain’s attempts to crack down on so-called drunken tourism this summer have been well publicised and the country is thought to be the first in Europe to restrict the promotion and sale of alcohol in holiday hotspots after the Balearic Islands limited alcohol beverages in all-inclusive resorts in Magaluf, El Arenal and Playa de Palma in Mallorca and Sant Antoni in Ibiza.
Now, travellers to the picturesque seaside town of Vigo in Galicia have been warned by the local authorities that they face fines of up to 750 euros (£645) if they are caught going to the toilet “in the sea or on the beach.” The city council plans to install public toilets for beachgoers and this season, public urination will be viewed as a “minor infraction” and “an infringement of hygiene and sanitary regulations.”
That’s not all though, as officials are also considering doling out fines to women who wear swimsuits or men who go topless on the streets. Likewise, gas cylinders and barbeques are banned from the beach, as is using shampoo or soap in the water, and tourists who leave their litter on the sand will be penalised.
Under the new bylaws, bathers who try to reserve a spot on the sand by leaving their towels will be fined, as will anyone playing with a ball and bat.
These measures, along with those of the Balearic Islands, have been introduced in a desperate attempt to improve Spain’s image and reverse the idea that it is the party capital of Europe, attracting thousands of young Britons each year.
In the ever-popular Costa del Sol, Malaga locals and businesses are attempting to stamp out “Magaluf-style drunken tourism” and the extraordinary number of hen and stag parties that descend on the historic city each summer. Here, the council is considering installing noise monitors in tourist apartments and hotel rooms.
