British woman dies in Mallorca flash floods
Another man is still missing after the freak weather event
A British woman has tragically lost her life following flash floods in Mallorca, Spain with a man still missing. The two hikers were caught in the Torrente de Pareis canyon during severe weather conditions, local police have confirmed.
Spanish authorities, including rescue teams and the Guardia Civil, have been searching the area by helicopter since Monday September 2. Despite poor weather conditions, efforts to locate the missing man are ongoing. Ten other tourists, also trapped by the floods, were successfully rescued.
The hikers were on a trail leading from the canyon to the Mediterranean Sea when they were caught off guard by the sudden storm. Footage released by the Guardia Civil shows search-and-rescue teams assisting those stranded in the area.
According to Juan Carlos Rodriguez, head of the Mountain Rescue Group in the Balearic Islands, the group of 10 rescued hikers had seen the two individuals swept away by the rising waters. “They were surprised by the storm,” Rodriguez explained, as flash floods rapidly engulfed the area.
Local authorities had issued warnings about the possibility of “very intense storms” and advised residents and tourists to avoid outdoor activities.
Heavy rain and strong winds have hampered the search. On Wednesday 4, police announced that the rescue operation had been paused due to dangerous weather conditions. However, teams remain on standby, awaiting a break in the adverse weather to resume their search.
The Balearic Islands, including Mallorca, are currently experiencing unseasonably harsh weather conditions, with flash floods affecting several areas. Weather experts have warned that these conditions are likely to continue in the coming days. Visitors and locals alike are being urged to take extra precautions.
