British couple found dead in Valencia floods
The married couple was swept away from their home in rural Valencia
The devastating floods that have ravaged much of southern Spain and the Valencian Community in particular have claimed the lives of a British couple, whose bodies were found in the town of Pedralba, in the Serranos region. The married couple, who were living in a rural, isolated home, were swept away by the torrent of water that flooded the area.
In the last few hours, the couple has been named locally as Terry and Don Turner and their devastated daughter, Ruth O'Loughlin, from Burntwood, Staffordshire, confirmed that her parents’ bodies were found in their car on Saturday November 2.
The news of the well-known couple's death has sent shockwaves through the community, with the mayor of Pedralba, Andoni León, confirming the tragic discovery. The couple's bodies were found along with that of a Spanish man, who also lost his life in the floods.
Located about 30 kilometres northwest of the city of Valencia, the town of Pedralba has been left in a state of devastation after the flooding, with many buildings damaged and streets filled with mud. The mayor has confirmed that municipal technicians are checking the structures of the buildings to ensure they are safe and do not pose a risk of collapse.
Despite this latest tragedy, the community has come together to support each other and the mayor of Pedralba has expressed his “infinite gratitude” to the volunteers who have flocked to the town to help with the cleanup efforts.
Over the weekend, more than 1,000 volunteers arrived in the town, and thanks to their efforts, the situation is “much better” than it was just 24 hours before. Shipments of aid have also arrived from all over Spain.
As the town begins the long process of recovery, the mayor is calling for donations of water, which is desperately needed to help with the cleanup efforts.
