ARCHIVED - British pensioner stabs wife to death on Costa del Sol
The 80-year-old Brit expat, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, had prior charges for domestic abuse
An elderly expat couple on the Costa del Sol have been at the centre of a grisly crime after a 69-year-old British woman living in Benalmádena (Malaga) was murdered last Friday night, November 4, by her 80-year-old husband.
The man, also British, stabbed his wife more than 20 times all over her body at their Costa del Sol home, and has now been arrested.
He is said to have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and had already been arrested three times in the last few months for incidents of domestic violence.
The murder took place at around 10.50pm on Friday night in a flat on Avenida Antonio Machado in the well-known urbanisation of Los Maites.
Police and emergency crews turned up at the property after the victim herself phoned for help via the number 091. They were unable to enter the property, and firefighters couldn’t break down the door, so they had to climb in through the balcony.
Once they gained entry, they found the woman on the floor, already dead, and the 80-year-old alleged perpetrator in the bedroom. The man did not resist arrest, according to police sources.
The man had been investigated for abuse charges three times in recent months, after having been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the beginning of this year. In none of the cases did his wife pursue the charges in court, and all three cases were closed. She never requested special protection measures, neither at the police station nor at the court.
The number of women murdered by men in cases of domestic gender violence so far this year now stands at nine in the autonomous community of Andalusia, 33 in Spain as a whole and 1,163 since 2003, when murders of women by their partners or ex-partners began to be registered as gender violence.
