A serious bus collision in Spain’s Barcelona has left four people in critical condition and dozens of others injured, including British and Italian nationals. The accident occurred on Avinguda Diagonal on the afternoon of Monday March 3 when one coach crashed into the back of another that was stationary at a designated drop-off point for tourists near La Pedrera.
The collision prompted a large-scale emergency response, with 10 fire brigade teams and 19 ambulances deployed to the scene. Emergency Medical Services (SEM) confirmed that 63 people received medical attention, with four critically injured, three seriously injured, 44 sustaining minor injuries and 12 escaping unharmed.
Among those critically injured are a pedestrian, a 60-year-old man who was struck during the collision, a tour guide from the cruise coach who was trapped in the vehicle, and two cruise passengers, one of whom is a 17-year-old minor.
The injured were transported to various hospitals across the city, including Hospital Clínic, Hospital Sant Pau, Hospital del Mar and Vall d'Hebron.

One of the coaches, operated by the company Julia, was carrying British, German and Italian cruise passengers en route to the Port of Barcelona, where their cruise ship was scheduled to depart at 6.30pm.
The second bus, operated by Canals Transport de Viatgers, was transporting a group of Italian students on a day trip from Lloret de Mar. One of the injured Italian passengers is reportedly being repatriated due to facial injuries.
An investigation led by the Guardia Urbana of Barcelona suggests that the Canals bus driver may have swerved to avoid the 60-year-old pedestrian who was crossing Avinguda Diagonal.
In doing so, he struck the stationary Julia bus, causing it to mount the pavement, crash into a tree and knock over a lamppost. Both drivers tested negative for alcohol and drugs.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident. As a precaution, the Civil Protection of the Generalitat activated the Procicat emergency plan, with additional psychological support teams dispatched to assist those affected.
In May 2023, a 57-year-old Scottish man died after being run over by a tram close to the Diagonal Mar commercial centre in Barcelona.
