Bus transport discounts continue in 2024 but may be lower in some Spanish regions
The Spanish government will subsidise 30% even if local authorities refuse to chip in the remaining 20%
Spain’s Minister of Finance María Jesús Montero confirmed this week that the government will continue to subsidise the cost of all public buses and Metros, so tickets will remain at least 30% cheaper throughout 2024.
During 2023, most of the regional governments kicked in an additional 20%, but if they refuse to do so this year then bus trips will be a little more expensive than what passengers have become accustomed to.
"But I am convinced that the autonomous communities will voluntarily contribute 20% so that bus tickets cost half and, therefore, we continue to combat the effects of inflation fundamentally on the domestic economy and on workers," Ms Montero confidently predicted on Thursday January 11.
The Minister of Finance pointed that the public transport bonus is a "progressive" measure since it saves people money, an important consideration in the current economic climate, while also promoting a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly mode of travel.
