Buyer beware: 1,000 euro fine in Spain for putting a for sale sign on your car
The DGT will fine car owners in Spain whether the vehicle is moving or parked up
At one point or another we’ve all seen cars or vans with ‘for sale’ signs in the window, a common practice the world over when private individuals are trying to offload their vehicle without having to go through a garage or dealer.
In Spain, however, this practice is completely illegal and it may seem illogical, but it’s banned even if your car is parked up on the side of the road or in your driveway.
But if it doesn’t pose any risk, then what is the problem? Well, it’s based on the premise of ‘surreptitious advertising,’ since Spanish city councils consider the practice of covert advertising in urban spaces to be illegal and so posting ‘for sale’ signs is usually classed as an infraction in most municipal ordinances.
Because the practice is so widespread, more and more towns and cities across Spain include it in their regulations on ‘street sales with advertising’ and depending on where you’re caught, it can lead to a fine of between 200 and 1,000 euros.
It’s not just confined to ‘for sale’ signs though, as the legislation also aims to crack down on illegal street-side sellers who advertise the price of their products in the windows of their cars.
Of course, if it’s considered an infraction to hang a ‘for sale’ sign in a parked car, it’s a more serious offence to actually drive a vehicle when there’s any kind of sticker or poster in the windscreen, as this is considered a safety issue by the DGT and will land motorists with an automatic fine of a 200 euro minimum.
