ARCHIVED - Cadiz imposes traffic restrictions in low emission zones
These are the municipalities of Cádiz that will limit cars this year

To minimise the environmental impact of road traffic, the Spanish government has decreed that cities with 50,000 or more inhabitants will have to create Low Emission Zones (ZBE for their initials in Spanish), where vehicle access will be limited or prohibited completely. This is the equivalent of the ULEZ in London.
To this end, the DGT has implemented vehicle environmental labels based on the emissions and pollutants of cars that should be placed on the windscreen. Older vehicles (those with B and C category badges) will have time limits determining when they can access certain city centre streets.
The municipalities of Cádiz are therefore working to implement this initiative, which will be rolled out throughout 2023.
Where and when will the restricted zones operate in Cádiz?
The times will differ from one municipality to another and no official ‘start’ date for restrictions has been agreed. Most local councils are currently working on establishing the Low Emission Zones and making them more pedestrian-friendly.
Algeciras
No specific date has been set for enforcing the ZBE in Algeciras but once established, restrictions will be in place between the north of Llano Amarillo (future Lake Marítimo) and the confluence of Capitán Ontañón with María Cristina Park.
Cádiz
In the provincial capital, there will be 33 cameras controlling access to the city centre and the Paseo Marítimo. The municipal plan is to convert the Paseo Marítimo between the Hotel Playa and Cortadura, and the entire centre of Cádiz, except the ring road, into a ZBE. There’s still no date for implementation.
Chiclana
Chiclana will also control access to its city centre with more than 50 cameras. To minimise pollution levels, the locality will also have three air quality measurement stations. The date remains unspecified.
El Puerto de Santa María
No scheduled start-up date.
Jerez de la Frontera
The activation of the Low Emissions Zone in Jerez depends on several works that are being carried out in the city centre, one of the most important of which began at the end of last year. At the moment, no dates are known, pending the completion of the roadworks.
La Línea de la Concepción
La Línea began the pedestrianisation of many city centre streets as part of its Sustainable Mobility Plan back in 2016. Now, in addition to proposing an area with very limited speed and restricted access, the local council is also considering blocking off the school district to traffic.
San Fernando
There is no specific date for the implementation of the ZBE in San Fernando, but the future plan involves the creation of superblocks that restrict vehicular access and car parks outside the city centre, which will force drivers to park up and continue on foot.
Sanlúcar de Barrameda
As is the case with all the other municipalities, it’s unclear when the Low Emission Zones will be fully implemented in Sanlúcar.
