ARCHIVED - CaixaBank customers in Spain hit with new charges for ATM withdrawals
Until now, CaixaBank and former Bankia customers have not had to pay commission on cashpoint withdrawals
Price hikes are currently commonplace from day to day household products to fuel and energy costs. And now it appears customers with one of Spain's largest banks will have to pay to withdraw their own cash at ATMs.
CaixaBank has announced changes in various operations and procedures, and new charges for cashpoint transcations.
This is because, some years ago, Bankia reached an agreement with banks such as ING, Banco Sabadell and the Euro 6000 network that allowed its customers to withdraw cash free of charge and without commission at any of its ATMs.
After Bankia's merger with CaixaBank, a further agreement was reached with the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) to extend this condition for a specific period, at the end of which, customers will have to pay fees to make cash withdrawals at these banks' cashpoints.
So when will the fees be introduced?
It depends on which bank the cashpoint belongs to. The agreement with Banco Sabadell and Euro 6000 expired on October 16, so CaixaBank customers now have to pay fees when using the ATMs of these two banks. For its part, ING will keep the agreement until January 31 2023.
The merger between CaixaBank and Bankia was completed last year after it was registered in the Mercantile Register. From then on, CaixaBank guaranteed its customers that there would be "no changes" to their operations pending the migration of each bank's operating platforms.
Consequently, although it changed the numbering of its current accounts, Bankia's loans and mortgages have remained exactly the same.
