Calm before the storm: Spain weather forecast June 6-9
Record temperatures of 42ºC in southern Spain before the rain sets in
Meteorologists have announced the imminent arrival of a DANA (an Isolated High Level Depression) that will drastically change the summer weather over the next few days. But there will be an eerie calm before the storm, when high temperature records will be broken in much of southern Spain.
Weather conditions will remain stable until Thursday but after this, the DANA will sweep in from the southwest, bringing intense rain and a significant drop in temperatures over the weekend.
Thursday June 6
Andalucía has been issued with an orange (significant risk) weather warning for most of Thursday afternoon, as parts of Córdoba and Jaén in the far north of the region are tipped to reach 40ºC or even up to 42ºC, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). But the mercury will rise in most of Spain, particularly on the Atlantic slope and inland areas.
As the front approaches Spain from Portugal, cloudiness will increase as the day goes by, particularly in the west and north, where there’s a good chance of scattered showers or light rain.
Yellow weather alerts for extreme heat have been issued in Aragón, Catalonia, Madrid and Navarra.
Friday June 7
The real shift in the weather will begin on Friday, and the day will be slightly overcast across the board. Isolated storms will start off in the northwest during the early hours and intensify as the hours go by. Later in the day, the rain is expected to spread to Extremadura and western Andalucía.
Daytime temperatures will take a bit of a hit in most places, especially in Andalucía, although the thermometers are still likely to reach 35ºC in large parts of central and northeast Spain.
Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia and Madrid are all under yellow warnings for high temperatures.
Saturday June 8
The storm will take hold on Saturday and the day will dawn damp and miserable in most of the southwest. The rain will become more widespread in the afternoon, extending to eastern Spain and many places could experience strong gusts and even hail.
The temperatures will take another hammering, falling sharply again in Andalucía, central and western Spain.
But even with this terrible forecast, no weather warnings are issued for Saturday at the moment.
Sunday June 9
It’s still a little unclear how the DANA will behave on Sunday but for now, Aemet expects cloudy skies and widespread rain and storms in most of the country as the front moves away from Spain towards the Mediterranean. However, it should remain dry in the Balearic Islands and much of southern Spain.
Daytime temperatures will continue to drop in northern and eastern Spain but they could begin to creep up again along the Mediterranean coast.
No weather warnings have yet been issued.
