ARCHIVED - Campaign launched to attract British cycling tourists to Region of Murcia
Cycling holidays have become one of the most popular active tourism choices for UK holidaymakers in the Region

In what promises to be a huge boost to the industry, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports has teamed up with the ‘British Cycling’ federation to promote the Region of Murcia as a top travel destination for cyclists.
Holidaymakers from the UK already account for the majority of the Region’s tourism, and this latest round of promotions, scheduled to run throughout August and September, is aimed at drawing more Brits to the area to experience the unique cycle trails it has to offer.
Minister Marcos Ortuño is banking on the campaign “reaching more than a million potential visitors from what is the main source market of international tourists to the Region.” This will be achieved through publishing content on social networks, social media campaigns, blogs, newsletters and the mailing of brochures to target clients in the UK.
According to Mr Ortuño, “cycle tourism in the Region has become one of the star activities within active tourism, since it adapts perfectly to the new demands of the traveller, increasingly directed towards sustainability, health, away from overcrowding and which takes place outdoors and in contact with nature".
And the Region of Murcia is certainly stepping up to the increased demand with a plethora of ever-expanding mountain and road routes to suit the taste and ability of every cyclist: Espuroad and Espubike, with 240 kilometres and 146 kilometres of routes, respectively, are located in the glorious surroundings of the Sierra Espuña Regional Park, while the Euro-Velo 8-Mediterranean Route itinerary runs all the way from Cádiz to Cyprus and crosses the Costa Cálida on a 217-kilometre path suitable for mountain, gravel or hybrid bikes.
As well as these official tour routes, Murcia has an abundance of regional greenways with more than 170 kilometres of cycle paths running through Campo de Cartagena, Mazarrón, El Hornillo in Águilas, Almendricos and Chicharra, passing through Cieza and Yecla; and no shortage of accommodation, services and facilities dedicated to cycling tourists.
